Médico pela Universidade de Brasília (1984) possui Mestrado Medicina Interna pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (1990), Master in Public Health na Columbia University (1992) e Doutorado em Medicina e Saúde pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (2006). Médico-assessor responsável pelo monitoramento global da tuberculose na Organização Mundial da Saúde (1996-1998). Atualmente médico epidemiologista (1993) da Universidade Federal da Bahia e professor de bioestatística (2006) e bioética (2011) do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Medicina e Saúde/UFBA. Coordenador do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Maternidade Climério de Oliveira/UFBA (CEPMCO)(2010) e do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia/UFBA (CEPFMB) (2012). Médico-Pesquisador (2008) da Fundação José Silveira/Instituto Brasileiro para a Investigação da Tuberculose (IBIT/FJS). Tem experiência na área de Medicina Interna e faz pesquisa na área de Doenças Infecciosas e Parasitárias, atuando principalmente em: HIV, tuberculose, leishmaniose, Hanseníase, epidemiologia e ensaios clínicos.
